Our sixth form offers a wide selection of subject choices to suit every student’s needs and aspirations.
All students in Year 12 are expected to study 4 different elements – this might be 4 different A Level subjects or could be 3 A Level subjects together with a compulsory fourth element of study (such as an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), Core Maths or Directed Study).
Each subject has a dedicated 10 hours of taught content per fortnight with most fourth elements taking a further 5 hours. Between lessons all students are directed to independently study in our large school library (containing a dedicated sixth form IT suite) or within one of the sixth form study zones around school.
In addition we offer vocational courses in business, engineering, health and social care, IT and science which have a different assessment pattern to traditional A Levels, with greater emphasis on coursework and different learning styles.
Students wishing to join our sixth form will need to meet our minimum entry requirements of 5 GCSEs at grade 5 or above including a minimum of grade 5 in Maths and English. In addition, most of our courses require higher entry grades and this information can be found on each course page.
Since 2011 we have run a successful collaboration between Horsforth sixth form and Benton Park School’s sixth form. Some of our subjects are either taught solely or partly at Benton Park School and some of their students visit our sixth form to be taught other subjects here. Please refer to the course specific information for details of which subjects are taught as part of this collaboration.
