Steve Wood - Community Governor

My wife Gill and I have lived in Horsforth since 1982 and I have been a Governor at Horsforth School since 1999 at which time our three daughters, Natalie, Ceri and Anna, were all attending the School.

At that time I was a part time lecturer at Park Lane College and also studying German at Leeds Metropolitan University so I had a wide and diverse involvement with educational systems. Somehow I also managed to find the time to be the Treasurer of the School’s PTA, now the Friends of Horsforth School.

Initially I was elected as a Parent Governor and subsequent to my daughters all moving on to further education I have been a Community Governor. For several years I’ve been the Chair of the Pastoral Committee which, amongst other things, is responsible for making sure that the school has appropriate and recognised rewards and sanctions processes, applies them in a consistent manner and monitors their effectiveness.

During my time as a Governor the School has experienced a lot of changes and significant challenges, most recently the conversion to Academy status, and as Governors we have had to, and will continue to, make difficult operational and strategic decisions which impact not only the staff and students, but also parents and carers and the community of Horsforth itself. We all subscribe to the school’s ‘Opportunity and achievement for all’ ethos which is at the heart of all of our decisions.

My day job is working as a financial analyst for BT Openreach and in my spare time I run with Horsforth Harriers and enjoy quizzes and travelling.
